Insurance & Reimbursement

Wondering if scalp cooling is covered by your insurance?

The American Medical Association (AMA) has assigned Category I CPT Codes for Mechanical Scalp Cooling, going into effect January 1, 2026. This update is a positive advancement for healthcare providers to standardize billing for this service.

These new billing codes do not guarantee coverage or payment. Coding and reimbursement information prepared by Cooler Heads is for informational purposes only. This information is not an affirmative instruction as to which codes and modifiers to use for a particular service, supply, procedure, or treatment. It is the provider's responsibility to determine and submit the appropriate codes for services rendered. Payer policies, coding requirements, and payments vary and are updated or changed over time. Providers should check and verify current policies and requirements with the payer for any particular patient.

Amma™ gives people undergoing chemotherapy the option to use scalp cooling to mitigate hair loss. Hair loss during chemotherapy doesn’t just impact how someone looks, it can announce to the world that someone is sick. We believe eligible patients should have the choice to keep their diagnosis private.
