Scalp Cooling gives patients a choice about whether or not they want to preserve their hair during chemotherapy.

Amma cools the scalp before, during, and after chemotherapy, helping reduce the amount of chemotherapy that reaches the hair follicles so patients can preserve their hair. The system consists of four key components: a Cooling Wrap that delivers a chilled solution to the scalp, a Neoprene Strap for added compression, a Compression Cap that keeps everything securely in place, and a Portable Cooling Unit that circulates the solution to maintain the optimal temperature.

Yes, scalp cooling does add extra time to a patient's infusion day. Patients will need to begin cooling 30 minutes before chemotherapy, usually while they receive premedications, and continue for 2 to 3 hours after their infusion ends depending on their regimen. While this extends a patient's overall time at the infusion center, most find they can use the cooling period to rest, read, work on a laptop, or spend time with loved ones.

Amma has to be cold to be effective. We recommend patients bring a warm jacket or a blanket with them to chemotherapy to help them feel warm. Most users say they get used to the cold feeling within the first 30 minutes of treatment.

Amma is intended for adults 21 and older who are being treated for solid tumors and do not have any contraindications to scalp cooling.

Patients will use Amma beginning 30 minutes prior to their chemotherapy, continue for the duration of the chemotherapy, and then for an additional 2 to 3 hours after chemotherapy is complete. After the infusion is complete, patients can leave the infusion chair to complete their scalp cooling therapy anywhere in the infusion center that has an outlet.

Patients can gently wash their hair on the third day after chemotherapy using cold water and a sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner, then pat it dry with a towel or allow it to air dry. To protect their hair, patients should avoid using hair dryers or heated styling tools, cutting or coloring their hair, braids, ponytails, tight hats, or any activities that cause heavy sweating. It is also best to avoid fully submerging hair in pools or the ocean during this time.

Patients can use the Amma System when it is prescribed by a provider and only when it is available at the treating infusion center. The infusion center will provide the necessary accessories and connect patients with the Cooler Heads Customer Care team. Amma stands out for its portability and compact design. This allows patients to get up and move around throughout the infusion center during treatment. Once the wrap is in place, it stays on for the entire session, so there is no need to change it during treatment.
